Course for Spanish as a Foreign Language teachers
August 20, 2014
Adriana Edith Garbarino Tebbenhoff

Spanish teacher courses , didactics of ELE (Spanish as a Foreign Language)and students of german

It could be said that  this contribution to the blog only came up in my life.  I had planned to write about it after finishing my report. Well then, here I have it, I am writing about it today.

Last week I lived through something in my classroom that had not happened to me in all my years of teaching.

My Spanish pupils who study German here in Germany were listening to an audio for a listening comprehension exercise.

I had planned to only do two short exercises: 1. Recognising the verbs in the preterite tense and 2. a multiple choice exercise.

The pupils liked the topic  " My childhood memories" so much that they organized themselves in order to continue with three more exercises.

A student proposed recognising all the words that described a feeling, another started to write about his/her own childhood memories and other students did the same as him and another students started a class debate on the excessive freedom of young people nowadays.  They personally exploited this listening comprehension exercise to the full.

How much they got out of a 3 minute audio!
And not mentioning the independance in the learning process! I even ended up participating in the debate as pupil myself.

At another time in my life  I would have cut short  this "improvisation" by the students  in order to fulfill the curriculum or because of a lack of time. Today I know, that the most important thing is to foster and support the student´s identification with the topic and to encourage them to be the creator of their own learning process.

I am happy to have carried out this course, it opened my mind and removed the veil of "habit" which covers the eyes of so many teachers.

Thus, dear collegues , let us listen to our pupils, often they have a lot to contribute and we do not give them the opportunities.

Greetings to everybody!
