Flexible programmes and chameleon-like teachers; Spanish courses for foreigners

In today’s world of continuous socio-economic change and ceaseless technological innovation, the need for flexibility and change in the foreign language classroom is clearly demonstrable. The guidelines set out by the Instituto Cervantes Curriculum and the European Common Framework of Reference, as well as the language centre’s own guidelines, are merely a starting point. Creating a curriculum that truly meets the needs and interests of our students requires much more.

A Spanish teacher in Lisbon

My academic backgroud is very different to that of the majority of language teachers that I know.

I studied Law at the University of Sevilla, I always liked reading and laws, especially Community Law. I started my career with an internship in Brussels, and dreamed of travelling the world and learning the in-depth workings of European jurisdiction.

Using the communicative method in Spanish language education

It was a motley mix of occurrences and interests that brought me to do this course. I have always loved discovering new cultures and countries, and have ended up moving abroad to study, to a country where the Spanish language is very important, albeit unofficially.

New ideas for Spanish as a Foreign Language examiners

This weekend, I attended a training course for examiners of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE) at C1-C2 level. The course started on Friday afternoon, and finished the following day at 8pm. It was quite intense, but at the same time very interesting and practically useful.

A Spanish teacher in Singapore

Hello, my name is Angela Nieto Jiménez, and I’ve just finished the final assignment of the Spanish as a Foreign Language teacher training course. I spent the first seven years of my professional life working in cinema, as a production technician and screenwriter. Three years ago, I had to move to Singapore for personal reasons. In this far-away corner of the world, I started to play with the idea of becoming a Spanish language teacher.

The Hemingway Spanish as a Foreign Language teacher training course: an entirely worthwhile effort

A few days ago, I completed the correspondence version of the Spanish as a Foreign Language teacher training course, and I would like to share my experience on this blog. During my time learning English in the UK, I had a great experience with language teaching.
I liked the participatory atmosphere in class, which I never found stressful. The teachers were able to get by without knowing even a word of Spanish, explaining to us the rules of grammar and vocabulary without any problems.

My experience as the professor of the Spanish as a Foreign Language teacher training course

Instituto Hemingway’s Spanish as a Foreign Language teacher training course is designed so that participants with no teaching experience whatsoever complete the course with a well-rounded knowledge of teaching theories and a good idea of the practical reality of the classroom. However, experienced teachers frequently sign up for the course as well, in order to update their knowledge and methods.

The graduates of our Spanish as a Foreign Language teacher training course set off on their adventures

The Spanish as a Foreign Language teacher training course is designed so that by the time they have completed it, participants will have a solid grounding in teaching theories and a good idea of the practice of teaching a Spanish class to foreigners. For those of the participants that already have some teaching experience, the course represents a good opportunity to update their ideas and revise certain concepts. For the majority however, the course represents their first foray into teaching. And they’ve loved it. However, since finishing the course, the graduates have taken very different routes.

Spanish or Castilian?

One recurring question among students is: what are the differences between Spanish and Castilian, the two terms used to describe what is, in reality, one language.
