Bilbao is one of the biggest and most vibrant towns of Spain. Surrounded by mountains and amazing beaches, it enables you to enjoy the long strolls, to go surfing, sailing or just relaxing on one of its beaches. Its climate, with a warm average temperature, is ideal for any visitor. Winters are smooth with pleasant summers and not excessively hot. Bilbao is known to have an amazing quality of life. It's also known for its university life, its tapas bar, its cultural attractions, its gardens, its shops and its fabulous buildings. Here you'll find a bustiling night life.
At the moment there are many reasons to choose a course of Spanish in Bilbao. There are many things to do in Bilbao throughout your staying. Bilbao is proud to have the Guggenheim museum designed by the architect Frank Gehry, a contemporary and timeless metro system designed by Sir Norman Foster, a modern airport designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and a cultural centre, La Alhóndiga, designed by Philippe Starck.
Obviously the list doesn't end here. Bilbao has lots to offer to students. A great number of offers of cultural, educational and 'sporty' apart from a number from a great number of markets, restaurants, shops and any kind of possible service.
An interesting idea is to walk along one of the markets. The most traditional one is probably the Sunday market in the Plaza Nueva, in the Casco Viejo. During the market, the square gets full of artisans and bohamians selling hand-made products and collectionists' products like stamps, money or antiques.
Another market is the so called Sunday market that is celebrated on the last Sunday of the month in the hall of the Museo Maritimo of Bilbao. The market offers a big number of decorative objects, furniture, vintage clothes, books .. created by local designers.
In the town there is also an area for parties. The most important one is the Aste Nagusia or Semana Grande, celebrated every year at the end of August. There are activities for the whole world: concerts, music and traditional dances, shows of rural sports, bull fighting, fireworks competitions, concerts ... Moreover in Carnival, Christmas or Easter the city offers events and extraordinary activities.
The gastronomy is another one of the points of attraction of Bilbao. The city offers a long list of bars and restaurants to choose from. Most of the tapas bars and pintxos can be found in the Casco Viejo, even if you have many in Abando and Indautxu. In your visit, we suggest you to follow a local habit of going in many bars tasting pintxos and drinking something. Normally you do it in a group of friends, especially on Friday or Saturday nights.
Remember that Bilbao is on the coast, that's why you can practice any type of water-sport, surfing, sailing, canoe, but you also have swimming, horse riding and nice strolls, all of this is compatible with our courses. Moreover, the town is one step away from Vitoria, San Sebastian or Santander where you can easily do one-day excursions.
Our school of Spanish in Bilbao is located at the centre of the town, next to the Abando station and the Teatro Arriaga. A very nice location to take part in any of the programs that we offer: Spanish classes, voluntary work, internships.
