Spanish courses and traditional cuisine: churros
As you may already know, at Instituto Hemingway in Bilbao we offer face-to-face and online Spanish courses but, we also offer a large variety of cultural activities such as visits to museums, wine tasting, excursions, cinema trips, exhibitions, sporting activities, and gastronomic outings. In this way, our school's students have the opportunity to get to know Spanish life and culture better. They also learn about the city they are in and improve their Spanish by practising it outside of the classroom.
Today, we are going to tell you about churros: one afternoon a month we take our students to eat this delicious typical Spanish pastry. Last Wednesday, Rodothea led a gastronomic outing to the bar “Bilbobeer”. There the students tried a Spanish specialty, famous around world: chocolate con churros.
It was the first time that some of the students tried this pastry and they liked it a lot. For those who don't know, churros is a typical northern - Spain dish. In some areas they are called “frutas de sartén”, due to its sweet flavor, and in the south of Spain they are called “jeringos” referring to the syringe shaped utensil used to make them.
Churros can be presented in different ways, straight as a pole or in the form of loops. They can be covered or filled with sugar, chocolate, custard, or dulce de leche. The ones that our students here studying Spanish tried last Wednesday were covered in sugar and were accompanied by a cup of melted chocolate. This is a typical snack in Spain!
