Practice your Spanish in Bilbao and enjoy Santo Tomás
On our website we want to tell you about this fantastic Spanish tradition: the festival of Santo Tomás.
On the 22nd of December the Zona del Arenal and Plaza Nueva will fill up with people of all ages celebrating such an important festival.
Santo Tomás´ market is the best opportunity to try natural, home-grown products. The one which stands out and which attracts most attention from our Spanish students is the traditional talo (a typical Basque tortilla) with chorizo. Many of them confuse the talo with the arepa ( a maize flatbread) but although it is similar it is not the same thing.
The talo is a grilled corn pancake and it originates from Guipúzcona. Due to the region´s mountainous terrain corn is the ideal plant to replace the problems with growing wheat (which needs flatter land). For centuries the talo has become the bread baked in (caseríos) country houses, typical houses in the North of Spain. During the Santo Tomás market you will also be able to listen to the best traditional music and to drink Txakolí(a white wine produced in the Basque region).
This traditional event has become the beginning of the Christmas festivities in our province and it is the ideal moment to practise your Spanish.
Do not hesitate and call by Instituto Hemingway to ask about this event; as a Spanish student in our city you should know about everything that is happening around you and you should enjoy total immersion.
And if you are interested in making your Spanish course coincide with the Santo Tomás Market at Instituto Hemingway, we offer you the possibility of combining intensive courses in the morning with endless free cultural activities in the afternoons.
