La Alhóndiga- A modernist creation by a French designer
Take advantage of the opportunity to get to know the city of Bilbao through participating in our free cultural activities!
For this Monday we have prepared a trip to La Alhóndiga- a place of interest which, being architecturally attractive and rich in history, attracts tourists from all over the world.
The Azkuna Centre (Traditionally known as La Alhóndiga- a name which is still widely used now) was constructed between 1905 and 1909. It was part of a project by Ricardo Bastida, who sought to introduce to Bilbao technical innovations regarding the structure and functions of modern architecture. In 1919 the building suffered a fire and was partially burnt down. After this it was used as a wine warehouse throughout the rest of the 20th century. However, in the early 2000s it was reconstructed by French designer Philippe Starck. The new building was revealed in its present form on the 18th of May 2010.
La Alhóndiga has now become a leisure and cultural centre popular with tourists and locals alike. It boasts a gym and swimming pool, which is situated on the upper level and has a glass floor. It also houses a brand new cinema which shows both commercial and independent films, a free library, several high-end bars and restaurants as well as 43 splendid and distinct supportive pillars, which exemplify the innovative and unique character of the building.
We invite you to participate in our visit to La Alhóndiga as a school. It is one of the wonders of the Biscay region, quite simply a must see!
