Free Cultural Activities: March 2016

Every month we organise a selection of cultural and social activities for our Spanish students. Monday to Friday we offer a variety of activities which provide the opportunity to get to know new people and gain a new perspective on Basque and Spanish culture. We always try to organise a wide range of events so that students of all ages, nationalities and level of Spanish can enjoy and feel included. This month we have included churros, pinchos, karaoke, museum trips and exclusive activities that reflect the Easter festivities.

Description:

On the 1st of March we start with one of the most emblematic structures in Bilbao; the Guggenheim Museum. It hosts an array of world leading contemporary art, as well as being a magnificent piece of architecture. Subsequently, on the 2nd we will have one of our famous wine tasting sessions with Alfredo, where we will try a selection of white wines, including sweet and dry wines, which is always popular! The next day we will visit the Museum de Pasos de Semana Santa, where we will deepen our cultural understanding of this Christian tradition in Spain. On the 4th we will taste some pinchos as a school, as well as taking advantage of free wine and drinks.

On the 7th we will continue with the theme of popular local food, in the form of churros with chocolate, which provides the opportunity for students to get to know each other while enjoying a tasty Spanish snack. The subsequent day we will explore the origins of the city and their impact today. On the Wednesday we will have another wine tasting; this time with red wines. We will carry-on with a cultural focus through our trip to the Basque Museum the day after, which hosts a selection of artefacts from this region. On the 11th we will meet again for pinchos, which is customary on Fridays.

The following week we will climb the Artxanda Funicular, a mode of transport that has, for over 100 years, provided beautiful views of the city and the nearby area. On the 15th we will watch a Spanish film which will give a new perspective on Spanish cultural, as well as providing an educational opportunity. We will have karaoke on the Wednesday, which will be available in 5 languages; Spanish, English, French, German and Russian. The day after we will walk along a section of the Way of Saint James, a path which has been awarded the status of UNESCO World Heritage site, thanks to its natural and architectural beauty. The following day we will have the third and final pinchos evening of the month.

During Easter we will see various processions, including those of Nazareth, the Lonesome Woman and the Saint, on the Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. On the Tuesday we will visit the Bull Ring, which also has an interesting museum. On the Friday and the following Monday the School will be closed as a result of national holidays. On the 29th we will meet in the School to play various table games, including naipes, parchís and ludo. On the 30th we will visit the Museum of Fine Art, which offers high quality art of all kinds from the last 10 centuries. On the last day of the month we will enjoy a country music concert as a school.
