Free leisure and cultural activities for Spanish students: May 2016

A fundamental aspect of our Spanish school is fun learning. The free activities present a magnificent opportunity to practice your Spanish with teachers and other students, deepen cultural knowledge of Spain and have fun. We believe that the best environment in which to learn is a friendly, open one. Therefore, each month we organise a wide selection of leisure and cultural activities that show everything that Bilbao has to offer with regard to gastronomy, history, music, nature, architecture, art and much more.

Firstly, on Monday the 2nd of May we will climb Monte Artxanda in the funicular, which has been operating for 100 years, to contemplate spectacular views of the city and the mountainous landscape that surrounds it. On Tuesday we are going to watch the football in a local bar; a Champions League semi-final between Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid. The following day we will enjoy some exquisite works in the Fine Arts Museum, which offers an array of artistic styles including Baroque, Romanesque, Contemporary, Basque and Impressionist. On the 5th we will visit the Basque Museum, home to a variety of art, artefacts, models and tapestries which show the culture and history of the Basque people. On Friday the 5th of May we will enjoy a free dinner in the way of pintxos, tortilla and wine in a local bar as a group, the best way to end the working week!

We kick off the second week of the month with a classic Spanish snack, churros with chocolate! The day after, we will continue with the theme of gastronomy through a wine tasting session, where our wine expert will teach students about the wine making process in Spain, the grape variations and the effect different types of ground have on them, before tasting a selection of different Spanish wines. On the 11th we will visit the Guggenheim Museum, one of Bilbao´s key attractions and one of the most outstanding architectural accomplishments of the last 20 years across the world. Owing to its popularity in March, we will enjoy another beer tasting session with our teacher Gregorio on the 12th of May. We end the week with a rock concert, an exciting event which will take place in a local bar in the student area of Deusto.

On Monday the 16th well will watch a critically acclaimed Spanish film that will provide an excellent insight into Spanish culture, as well as giving students the possibility of improving their linguistic skills. On Tuesday we will have our second and last wine tasting of the month; always a popular event! The next day we are going to visit the Bull Ring and the adjoining museum, which offers a collection of interesting exhibitions; an authentically Spanish cultural phenomenon. On the Thursday we will have another tortilla cooking class, as it was such a success last month! It is a very inclusive activity which reveals a fundamental pillar of the Spanish culinary condition. On the 20th we will enjoy pintxos again as a school, with the option of free entry to a concert in a nearby bar afterwards.

Throughout the last full week of the month we have some particularly special activities. We start with an international dinner, in which we will share typical dishes from our respective countries. It is a great exchange of cultures and cuisines. On the 24th we enjoy sherry, a typical Spanish wine in a charming bar with an impressive décor which it has maintained since its foundation in 1903. On Wednesday we will travel to a beautiful village named Balmaseda, situated to the east of Bilbao. On the last Thursday of the month we have planned a trip to the beach, as we get closer to summer! On the 27th we will eat pintxos for the last time as a school. On Monday the 30th we will enjoy churros with chocolate again, followed by a trip to the Maritime Museum, which reveals the curious origins of Bilbao as one of Spain´s major ports.
