Students of our Spanish courses enjoy a FREE trip to Bilbao's Maritime Museum

14 Mar 2017

Today our students enjoyed a brilliant and FREE trip to Bilbao's Maritime Museum. Every day we have free, afternoon activities such as this for all of our students designed to help them get to know the Basque country and its culture. Bilbao has a famous maritime history and therefore this museum is a must see. If you are interested in boats, fishing, nautical trade and war then we guarantee you’ll love it!

The building was built on the old Euskalduna shipyard, a famous spot for the construction of ships that once dominated a large part of the cities landscape. The museum now stands out amongst the cities skyline thanks to its famous red crane that draws visitors from all age groups. Known as the Carola Crane, it is a genuine witness of the estuary’s history as it has stood for many decades. With both interactive activities for children and fascinating exhibitions for adults the museum has something for everyone.

The visit to the museum begins with images of Bilbao throughout the ages, giving you a sense of how much the city has changed. Here you get a sense of how much the city has been deindustrialised over the past few decades. In recent years it has moved away from the production and export of raw materials, which the city had thrived upon in the past. Most of this trade was maritime, passing through The Port of Bilbao, one of the busiest ports in Spain.

As well as interesting photos and works of art, the museums main attractions are the multiple sea vessels that are on display. Looking at these magnificent and fascinating ships you really get an idea of what it was like for those who had to live at sea for long periods of time. You can discover how the boats were made and what their purposes were. Our students certainly had a great time.
