Second language adqusition: an experience from Finalndia

Due to the fact that this is a blog about languages and many visitors are foreign Spanish students, I have decided to write in English, even if it's not my mother tongue; something that many people may be afraid of, but totally necessary for the learning of any language, and something I encourage people to do.

I've always been fond of learning languages. By living in a bilingual town, and speaking both languages (Spanish and Basque) since childhood, it's been normal for me to compare different languages and learn habits and tactics for acquiring new forms of communication. Living in contact with more than one language gives you a rich perception about the learning of different idioms.

Given that, learning new languages was more interesting to me, as I discovered the possibility to understand better different points of view. Learning languages is learning to look at the world through different glasses for me. That's why, as I learned, I started to be interested also in the process of teaching. I realized that that was something I could do, as being a multilingual person helps you understanding the needs of your students and provide them with the same tools that work for your own learning.

So, when I started becoming interested in Nordic cultures, I did not doubt to travel to one of those countries, Finland, for work; and learn Finnish right there. There I learned more about language teaching as I attended Finnish lessons, and I became familiar with the way of learning in other countries. Nowadays, back in Spain, I continue learning Finnish, hoping to reach a good level someday, and knowing that it will help me discovering new things about that country.

In conclusion, I think that there are many ways of learning and many things to learn, but all will always be rewarding when one discovers the true potential of multilingualism. It's the best equipment to have for your life.
