Semana Grande with Spanish courses in Bilbao

August has now arrived and, in line with tradition, we prepare to celebrate Semana Grande the most expected event of the year.

Our school lives in a active way Bilbao’s fiestas and we offer a programme of cultural activities that allows our students to enjoy all the activities provided for in this fantastic initiative, wich every year fills Bilbao’s streets of a festive atmosphere and that is increasingly attracting more people from all over the world.

Semana Grande has a very important cultural and social significance. For nine days, everybody is from Bilbao: partecipation and diversity are key words of this series of stimulating events.

There are dozens of cultural and recreational workshops that are supposed for every taste and for all ages, and with an offer of theatre shows which provides street theatre, circus, concerts, barracks, theatrical works, manifestations, paper giants and basque dances.

The undisputed mascot of this week so populare is Marijaia a fictional character designed by the painter Mari Puri Herrero on 19 august of 1978 on behalf of the Fiestas Commission. The name of Marijaia derives from the basque language and it corresponds to the Spanish “Señora de las fiestas”.

A week full of fun that promotes respect, tolerance, civic sense and solidarity.

During this week of parties, our lessons will normally take place, except on Friday 25 that is a public holiday in Bilbao as a día grande of fiestas.

For that date, on Fridays 25, there will be a special cultural activity: watch bullfighting scheduled for this day. The meeting point will be at school at 4:30 pm.

Saturday 19, Inauguration at the Arriaga Theater at 6:00 p.m.

Plaza de toros. First Corrida

7:00 p.m. Receipt of Marijaia, Pregón and Disparo del Txupin

8:00 p.m. Sala Bilborock XXXII Muestra Pop-Rock: Larregi//Kurrixe

8:00 p.m. apertura dei chioschi con Marijaia

8:30 p.m. Plaza Arriaga. Toro de fuego

9:00 p.m. Pérgola. Dj Carlos del Pozo

10:45 p.m. Fireworks XXVI International Competition city of Bilbao.

Tuesday 22 we will assist to a bullfighting at 4:30 p.m. a una corrida alle ore 16:30 and from 5:30 p.m., we will partecipate in a debate on bulls.

Thursday 24, it will be dedicated to the theater of streets and the knowledge of different cultures. We will attend the show “The rise of the full moon” a show of the theatre company from Ethiopia.

Friday 25, the school will be closed but we will have the opportunity to enjoy all the planned events together for this day .

More precisely, we will have the chance to see a bullfighting again and participate in the resulting debate on the bulls.

The party atmosphere is already pervading the streets of Bilbao and our school!
