The FIFA World Cup 2022: Germany vs Spain - Confrontation of two archenemies

On the 20th of November 2022 it will finally be "that" time again: the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. It is the first winter World Cup and the second World Cup after Japan/South Korea 2022 in the Asian continent. This year Germany will duel with their archenemy, Spain along with Japan and Costa Rica in group E.

But it is not the first time that Spain and Germany will face off in the Worlds. When Spain and Germany faced off for the first time in the Worlds it was all or nothing. For the Spaniards they had to win and for the Germans they couldn't lose. This was the confrontation before the last game of the preliminary round of the World Cup in 1996 on the 20th of July in Birmingham. Spain left the playing field as a loser in both this game and the following one in 1982. The third and last encounter in the World Championships ended in a draw for both nations and both teams reached the knockout round.

This year, Spain was directly classified for the World Cup as European Qualifiers Group Champions. Coach Luis Enrique's team confirmed their participation in the World Cup with a victory of 1-0 to Sweden on the final matchday. This is the 12th consecutive year for Spain in the World Cup. In the 2022 world cup, our country is one of the great favourites. Spain is seventh in the FIFA World Ranking of October 2022. In addition, the Spanish football team is world champion and could celebrate their second win in Qatar. The Spanish football team was once World Champion in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. In the end, Spain beat The Netherlands 0-1. The second best result was 4th place in the 1950 World Cup in Brasil. Also, our team reached the quarterfinals in the World Cup finals in 1934, 1986, 1994 and 2002. In total, Spain participated in 15 of the 21 World Cups.

The German football team has won 4 World Championships up until now. The title victories were in 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014. The only preliminary round of the World Cup occured in 2018 in Russia. Now things should be better again in Qatar 2022. Incidently, the national team was proclaimed as European Champions for the last time in 1996. The team for this year is is characterised by having players who are very valuable. These include, for example, FC Bayern Munich players like Leon Goretzka, Joshua Kimmich, Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sané. In addition, there are also very well paid players from Chelsea FC like Kai Havertz and Timo Werner. Here they also play a very important role. In the first five games, exactly these players were among Hansi Flick's regulars, in the offensive area. The emerging talents Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala, that already have a high market value should also be forgotten here.

In view of this balance, it remains to be seen how the fourth World Cup match between the two archenemies, Germany and Spain, in Qatar will be and how both teams will fare in the tournament.

Instituto Hemingway wishes all football fans a lot of fun in the World Cup!
