Plan to visit Bilbao for 2 days
After your week of classes at Institut Hemingway, we invite you to discover the Basque region by putting together a little programme for you!
To start off your weekend!
Day 1: Bilbao, between modernity and tradition
Start your Saturday with a visit to the Guggenheim Museum, a symbol of the city's urban transformation. Here you can discover contemporary works and admire the futuristic architecture of the building, designed by Frank Gehry.
Then stroll along the River Nervión to Casco Viejo, Bilbao's old quarter. Its cobbled streets are home to Santiago Cathedral and the Plaza Nueva, ideal for savouring pintxos, the must-try Basque tapas.
In the afternoon, explore the Ribera Market, one of the largest covered markets in Europe, where you can sample local specialities such as bacalao à la biscayenne. Finish the day with a stroll over the Zubizuri Bridge, an architectural masterpiece offering magnificent views of the city at sunset.
Day 2: Excursions in the surrounding area
On Sunday, head for the Basque coast. Just 35 minutes from Bilbao, visit San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a spectacular islet linked to the mainland by a winding bridge. After climbing the 241 steps, you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean.
Continue your escapade with a stop in Getxo, a charming coastal village, and cross the Vizcaya Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can finish off the day on the wild beaches of Sopela, ideal for relaxing or trying your hand at surfing.
In just two days, Bilbao and the surrounding area will offer you an experience rich in cultural, gastronomic and natural discoveries.
