Some visits leave a mark on a city  and this one certainly did. Recently, several ships from the United States Navy docked in Bilbao for a brief but memorable stopover. Known for their discipline and global experience, the marines took some time off to explore our city. The result ? A true love story.

On its official website, NAVSEA (Naval Sea Systems Command), the U.S. Navy published a very praiseful article about Bilbao. The city is described as a “gem of northern Spain”, with remarkable architecture, world-class gastronomy, and breathtaking landscapes. A powerful endorsement — especially coming from an institution that has seen the world.

It’s no coincidence that Bilbao was featured in the Navy’s official guide for the over 3,000 servicemembers stationed at the Rota Naval Base in Cádiz. Despite being nearly 1,000 kilometers away, Bilbao is among the top destinations recommended for short leaves and the marines quickly understood why

During their visit, they discovered a city where modernity meets tradition in a unique blend. They walked along the Ría, visited the iconic Guggenheim Museum, tasted delicious pintxos, and met friendly, proud locals who welcomed them warmly.
