Christmas in Bilbao, 2025
In Bilbao, the city will switch on its display of lights on Wednesday 26th November at 8pm to set the mood for this festive season, with the illuminations shining nightly until early January.
The lights will transform main avenues like Plaza Moyúa and parks such as Parque de Doña Casilda into magical corridors of light, with themed trees, tunnels, and installations.
The Arenal Christmas market is a must-see, offering everything from handmade gifts to local treats like turrón (nougat). Bilbao also celebrates Olentzero, the Basque version of Santa Claus, with parades and performances, to get you into the holiday spirit!
You can enjoy outdoor ice-skating at Moyúa Plaza, and warm up with hot chocolate and churros. Don’t miss out on traditional Basque dishes like Txangurro (spider crab) and the Roscón de Reyes (King’s Cake), popular at this time of year.
Bilbao offers plenty of festive cultural events, from Christmas concerts at the Palacio Euskalduna to local folk music performances. The City Hall Square features a stunning Christmas tree, perfect for photos and holiday memories.
Celebrate New Year’s Eve with the tradition of eating 12 grapes at midnight, and welcome the new year with fireworks. On January 5th, the Three Kings Parade fills the streets with sweets and joy, enjoyed by all.
