Spanish Courses and the Basque Museum in Bilbao

At the Hemingway Institute, in addition to teaching our students Spanish, we are passionate about introducing them to the beauty of Basque culture. To help them become familiar with it, we organise a variety of daily activities in which all our students can take part.

This August, we have arranged a visit to the Basque Museum on 19 August at 4:00 p.m., offering a unique opportunity to discover the history, culture and traditions of the Basque Country in an enjoyable and educational way. The meeting point will be the Hemingway Institute, located at Bailén Kalea 5. From there, we will walk together to the museum in Bilbao's Old Town.

The museum first opened in 1921 as the Basque Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum, with the aim of preserving the region's historical and cultural heritage. In 2023, the building underwent an extensive renovation to modernise its facilities while respecting its historical character. The refurbishment was completed in June 2026.

During the visit, students will explore the museum's different exhibition rooms and discover archaeological finds, traditional tools and objects related to fishing, agriculture and industry. They will also have the chance to see the famous Mikeldi Sculpture, one of the most important symbols of the Basque Country's historical heritage.

This visit will allow students to broaden their knowledge of Basque history and culture, stimulate their curiosity and enjoy a rewarding learning experience beyond the classroom.
