Let’s visit the Cy Twombly exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum!

Instituto Hemingway invites all its students studying Spanish to a new cultural activity: a visit to the Guggenheim museum to discover the works of the American artist Cy Twombly. We will be meeting at the school at 4pm on Thursday the 29th of January.

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, designed by the American architect Frank O. Gehry, is a magnificent example of the most outstanding architecture of the twentieth century. The building represents a real landmark thanks to its innovative design and is the perfect backdrop for exhibiting contemporary art.

Cy Twombly, born in Virginia in 1928, is one of the most relevant and influential artists active today. In the early 1950s he trained at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the prestigious Arts Students League of New York and at the Black Mountain College in Ashville, North Carolina. He won a scholarship to the Fine Arts Museum in Virginia thanks to his first exhibition in 1951 at the Kootz gallery in New York. As well as his work on paper and canvas, Twombly also created sculptures which he covered with white paint, inspired by the Ancients. Since then, Twombly has divided his time between living in Rome, Gaète and Lexington.

This artist mixes genres – his work is not only abstract, or purely illustrative, but a paradox in form. He shows a great fascination with the world of classical literature and history, which has an important influence on his language and artistic creations. The expressive richness of Cy Twombly’s work has its roots in a metaphorical language full of symbols which reflect mythological themes, the passage of time and places of personal interest for him. History, poetry, classical mythology and the Mediterranean countryside are some of the sources which the artist draws on to create his works. Many of his titles reflect these creative origins.

Cy Twombly is one of the most important artists of his generation.
