Spanish courses and surf lessons this Summer

The surfing season is upon us! Learn how to surf whilst doing your Spanish courses with us in Bilbao.

Bilbao is situated right on the Basque coastline, a 200km long surfing paradise. Just a short metro ride from the city’s centre, you can find some of the best surfing locations in Europe, suitable for both beginners and experts.

The Basque coastline has a variety of surf spots with a wide degree of difficulty. Just a 30 minute drive from Bilbao you can find the small coastal town of Mundaka, considered by many as the best surfing location in Europe. The estuary on which the town is situated has created a sandbar that forms hollow waves perfect for surfing. Subsequently, the town has hosted multiple world championships containing some of the world’s best surfers. Winter is considered the best time to go as over 50% of the days are considered ideal for surfing; that’s if you can survive the cold!

Meñakoz is the other 5 star rated surfing location in the area. The stony beach is less well known than others in Biscay but is widely renowned amongst surfers as having some of the biggest waves in Europe, often reaching 6 metres tall. However, the large swell and rocky coast make this a dangerous place to surf and is therefore recommended for only the most experienced.

However, if you are a beginner and you simply wish to learn to surf, the Basque coast has many other beaches suitable for you. Close to Bilbao, you can find Bakio and Sopela, two great spots where the waves are smaller and more forgiving to newcomers. Furthermore, at this time of year the sea is at its warmest before it begins to cool down over the winter. Therefore, if you have never surfed before but are keen to learn, now is the time to come!
