Free Leisure and Culture Activities Calendar for April 2016, Available to All Spanish Students

Every month we organise an array of activities with the aim of offering our Spanish students an insight into Spanish and Basque culture, as well as giving them the opportunity to get to know students from other classes. This month we have planned some truly unmissable events which include gastronomy, wine, excursions, concerts and, museum and theatre visits. We believe that getting to know the people of Bilbao and the surrounding area is a fundamental part of taking advantage of your stay abroad. We are committed to providing you with a really memorable experience through interactive classes, and fun and instructive activities.

The following is a description of all this month’s activities, with a calendar attached at the bottom.

Description of Activities:

On Friday the 1st of April we will visit a local bar, enjoy a variety of pintxos and chat with students from other classes, as well as teachers and employees of the School. After pintxos we usually enjoy a drink in the Old Town. The following week we will climb Mount Artxanda via the funicular, which provides unbeatable views of the city and the surrounding mountains. On Tuesday we will have fun with board games and Spanish cards, followed by a trip to the Fine Arts Museum on Wednesday, which always offers a fascinating selection of works. On the 7th of April we will have a drinks evening, which includes a free drink in one of the thousands of establishments Bilbao has to offer. With such activities we are able to overcome cultural and linguistic barriers, giving students the opportunity to get to know new people. We finish the week with another evening of pintxos and socialising.

The following week we start with a Spanish film that brings to light important elements of Spanish culture, as well as social and historical themes. The day after we will explore the origins of the city of Bilbao, visiting the Maritime Museum, which makes available to the public a selection of interactive exhibitions, as well as a variety of boats. On the 13th we will have a one-off activity that will reveal to students how to cook tortilla, one of the cornerstones of Spanish culinary tradition! The following day we will visit a local bar to enjoy a relaxed evening of jazz, close to the picturesque area of La Ribera. On Friday the 15th we will have a night out in the Guggenheim Museum, as part of the increasingly popular event; “Art After Dark”, which includes a concert with 3 Spanish bands, followed by DJs, all of which takes place in and around one of the most iconic buildings in Bilbao, with free access to the Museum.

We kick-off the penultimate week of April with a trip to Portugalete, the Hanging Bridge and Getxo, named as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. On Tuesday we try some churros with chocolate, a classic Spanish snack! The next day, we will taste a selection of Spanish white wines with Alfredo, our wine connoisseur. We continue with the cultural theme through a visit to the Basque Museum, a testimony of the 1000 year history of the Basque people. On Friday the 22nd we will get together again for the third time to enjoy pintxos as a school.

In the last week of the month we will experience a truly authentic cultural offering, starting with an international dinners, which involves the sharing of various national dishes, brought by our Spanish students. It is a fascinating exchange of cultures, as well as presenting the opportunity to make new international friends. The day after we will have our second wine tasting with Alfredo, this time with various red wines. On the 27th we have one of the highlights of the month; a flamenco show called ‘Sacromonte’, at a local theatre. We will visit the Guggenheim Museum on the Thursday afternoon, ending the week with one of the most highly attended events; pintxos!
