The Cultural Activities For September Are Out!

September promises to be a culturally packed month! You can take full advantage of these free activities offered by Instituto Hemingway to get to know Bilbao as well as meet new people from all around the world. Is there a better way to learn Spanish?

We will jump right into the first week of September with a bit of culture and we’ll be bringing the group to visit la Catedral de Santiago situated in the heart of Casco Viejo. We’ll follow the week with a gastronomic activity! The students will be able to enjoy a carolina, an authentic Basque pastry. Custard, meringue and dark chocolate are the main components of this delicious dessert. ¡Que aproveche!

On Friday, September 7th, after classes, the students will be able to admire one of the best panoramic views in Bilbao by making their way up to the top of Monte Artxanda. Although it IS possible to make your way up by foot, we’ll take it easy and make it a bit more fun by using the funicular. Later at night, and like every Friday, the group will be able to kick off the weekend with a night of paella, drinks and great conversations with fellow students.

The following week, on the 10th of September, the group of students will, once again, get a chance to start the week off by visiting a frontón, the place where a traditional Basque game is played. The game consists of hitting a ball against a wall and can be played indoors or in open-air. Traditionally, the game was played against the walls of churches and would gather villagers as well as priests in entertaining matches! Furthermore, 2 visits to museums are planned; on the 11th the students will get to visit the famous Guggenheim museum and on the 12th, a visit to the Maritime museum is planned. On Thursday the 13th of September, a reoccurring activity, as well as a favorite amongst the students, is none other than the Cereal Bar! Hmm, what’s a cereal bar you might ask? Instead of telling you, we highly encourage you to check out the video we made in our up and running channel on YouTube which gives you a colorful insight!

On September 18th at 7:30 PM, our beloved Alfredo, will be hosting a wine tasting in Instituto Hemingway. That evening, you will be able to sample and enjoy 3 wines specially selected by our connoisseur. Keep an eye out on our website to find more information on the wines that will be offered to you. The following day, an excursion outside of Bilbao is planned to Guernica; the students will visit the Peace Museum and will get a chance to learn more about an important piece of Basque history.

On the 24th, we’ll kick off the week by moving in a fun and friendly game of bowling! On the 25th, a pub quiz activity is scheduled, a first for Instituto Hemingway! This new activity will take place in a pub where students will be put into teams and will have the chance to test their knowledge in a 3-round quiz. Later that week, a walk by the beach is planned. It might be a little bit too cold to swim but the sun still shines here in Bilbao during the month of September so it is only normal to want to take full advantage of the good weather!
