Spanish through film: “En ninguna parte”

At Instituto Hemingway we would like to give a warm welcome to the publishing company Edinumen, which will present a collection for learning Spanish using films.
Working in the ELE classroom with real sources gives the student the opportunity to access other types of knowledge than just linguistic material; and it also provides the teacher with different and motivating material which is well-suited to the different abilities of speakers, both general and communicative.
The material aids learning and consists of:
• The DVD of the original film with subtitles in Spanish
• A book with educational material and a guide to viewing the film: activities and suggestions for practising communicative skills as well as the linguistic, sociolinguistic, pragmatic and cultural aspects which arise from it.
The film
“En ninguna parte” was shot digitally for aesthetic and budgeting reasons. This film will make up part of a trilogy which will have the same aesthetic concept. The scripts written by the director, Miguel Ángel Cárcano, have a common theme in that they all feature a group of ordinary people who find themselves faced with an extraordinary universe, or vice versa.
Synopsis
In the middle of nowhere, at a crossroads on a minor road, there is an old petrol station whose owner is José, a 50 year old widower, who lives and works here with his son Pablo and his daughter Rais. The chance arrival of three members of a film crew interrupts this monotony and causes something to change in the lives of each of these six people.
The director
Miguel Ángel Cárcano (1972) is an Argentine filmmaker who is based in Spain. He graduated from the University of Buenos Aires with a degree in Audiovisual Media, and has accomplished various things in cinema and in the world of television. As well as “En ninguna parte”, his first work, in 2000 Cárcano filmed the short “Los hombres que ríen” and in 2005, the feature-length “Interior (noche)”, which was awarded the title of “Best Film” at the Albacete Film Festival.
