Discover the opera of Rossini
On Monday 15th December the Spanish students at Instituto Hemingway will have a night at the opera at the Arriaga Theatre. As a complement to the intensive Spanish courses we have organised some fantastic cultural activities and we are sure that some opera will be of interest to everyone.
Bilbao is a city with great cultural activities and the Arriaga Theatre offers many opportunities to discover different types of artistic expression. Now it is time to enjoy opera.
On this occasion we will meet at Instituto Hemingway’s office at 7.30pm and from there we will go to the Arriaga, just 5 minutes away from the school. The show starts at 8pm and we will be able to enjoy Rossini.
Il viaggio a Reims is an opera written by Rossini (1792 – 1868) at the request of King Charles X of France. It first opened in June 1825 and tells the story of an encounter that takes place in a spa in Plombières between a group of people who are heading to Reims for the coronation of Charles X. This group includes the owner of the spa, a frivolous Parisian countess, an Italian antiques dealer, a Spanish admiral, the Polish widow of an Italian soldier and a Russian general. Rossini used this ‘mixed salad’ (the author was famed for his culinary facet) to compose an opera filled with comic interludes.
