Spanish language students at the Instituto Hemingway visit the historical town of Guernica

Instituto Hemingway offers a variety of cultural activities that help the students learn more about the Spanish culture outside of the classroom. Every day there is an event planned for the students which gives them the opportunity to put into practice what they have learnt in class.

This week the students were able to visit the historical town of Guernica as part of their learning program. The students visited the Museum of Peace and the Assembly House, where for century representatives of Biscay met to discuss the common problems of the territory. The students also got to see the famous tree of Guernica, which is the universal symbol for the Basque people.

The Basque town of Guernica was bombed during the Spanish Civil war, causing widespread destruction and deaths. The raid by planes was called Operation Rugen and was performed by German Luftwaffe and the Italian Fascist Aviazione Legionaria. The bombing was subject of the anti-war painting Guernica by Pablo Picasso.
