Rioja Wine Tasting in Vinyeard Tondonia – Haro with Spanish Students

At Instituto Hemingway we organize frequently activities that combine Spanish courses with other activities such as wine tasting or visits to wine cellars. On this occasion we approached the famous wine cellar that was founded by D. Ramón Lopez de Heredia – Vineyard Tondonia.
We visited the centennial wine cellar where it seems as though time has stopped, and we learned about the traditional techniques of aging wines. One of the trademarks at the wine cellar is a taste for the traditional, which has led them to abandon stainless steel in order to concentrate on wood in the containers and barrels. The barrels are also produced by hand.
One of the most important characteristics at the cellar is that it is able to offer white wines that have been aged using the same processes as the red wines, giving them features both special and different.
On this account we had the opportunity of participating in a tasting of historical wines. We started with white wines from the vineyard Tondonia from the years 1999, 1978 and 1973. Wines of surprise. For those that like white wine, to enjoy a wine from 1973 in such a setting is truly a unique experience. Later we tasted the red wines of vineyard Tondonia from the years 1991, 1986, 1978 and that of vineyard Bosconia from 1964. This last one made us all smile since it was older than any of us, and in an excellent state.
