Visit to San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao

This Thursday, fans of football can enjoy a trip to the Estadio San Mamés, AKA the Cathedral, a clear reflection of the Basque people’s passion for the sport and support for their team, Athletic Club. Indeed, its fans have much to be proud of; the club has played in the First Division since its creation in 1928.

Opened in 1913, San Mamés is Spain’s oldest stadium and has been the focus of numerous myths and legends in addition to the site of major sporting events. Indeed, the stadium was almost completely rebuilt in the eighties to host the 1982 FIFA World Cup which saw Italy triumph, beating West Germany 3-1. In March 2006, a new project was approved, allowing the expansion of the stadium, increasing its capacity from 46,000 to 58,000.
