Spanish and surfing classes in Bilbao: the season begins!

In recent years surfing has really taken off on the Basque shores, with some claiming that the stretch extending between Biarritz and Bilbao is the best surfing coast in Spain and possibly in Europe. Instituto Hemingway is positioned within easy access of popular surfing beaches such as Larrabasterra, Sopelana and of course the famous waves of Mundaka. Sopelana is located on the Plentzia metro line, as is Larrabasterra, and is a good place for surfing at any time of the year and at any stage of the tide. This beach frequently hosts regional surfing competitions while also being ideal for beginners. Mundaka is a powerful river mouth break located in the picturesque Gernika estuary which is a natural area protected by the UNESCO.

After class, students can take the metro to one of the surfing beaches. Instituto Hemingway is lucky to have “bay watchers” located at the beaches to keep us informed of surfing and weather conditions so that students who wish to go surfing know what to expect when they arrive at the beach.

Surfing is a thrilling and exhilarating activity that everybody should try. It is a high adrenaline sport that can be enjoyed by complete beginners or professionals. If necessary, we can provide the students with equipment hire service which includes changing rooms and showers right next to the beach to make the most of valuable surfing time.
