Hospitality management review with interns of Instituto Hemingway

Hospitality Management is one of the fastest service industries to work in. I am a student studding Hospitality Management in England where I already have 2 years experience in this industry but wanted some “hands-on” experience to include on my CV. Being able to speak another language is such an advantage if you want to work in Hospitality as it gives you the benefit of being able to work abroad. It was here that I discovered Instituto Hemingway, a school which teaches Spanish to foreign students. After contacting Instituto Hemingway and organizing a month of Spanish lessons I felt more comfortable to go out there and work in a hotel, as before my Spanish was not up to the standard the hotel where I applied to work for was looking for.

I applied to work in a hotel in the north of Spain, Bilbao. The hotel was located in the traditional district of Indautxu in Bilbao commercial area.

When I arrived there I was given the day off to unpack and get to know the city, the boss also greeted me on arrival. I was introduced to all the other staff in the hotel and was given my uniform and shown where I would be staying in the hotel. On my first day of work I was told I would be working in the kitchen and helping with the preparation of the meals and in the evenings I would be working as a waitress. I worked these shifts for the next 4 weeks. After my first month I was told I would be changed to working the breakfast and dinner service and in the day, worked on arrival which meant helping customers check in, show them to their rooms, and give them their keys to their rooms. I worked these new shifts for the rest of the 4 weeks too. After working at the hotel for 2 months my Spanish had improved a lot and I was a lot better at speaking to customers. This is what I can do in this hospitality management review.

My last month at the hotel I was told I would be working the cleaning shift in the morning where me and my working partner would clean out all the old laundry from the rooms when the customers had left. I would also help out with the dinner service working as a waitress, and clean up the plates.

My 3 months at the hotel really helped me experience Hospitality Management “hands-on” and showed me what I would be doing on a daily bases. It was a very productive experience. My Spanish also improved a lot too as I would be talking to customers on a daily bases.

Overall my Hospitality Experience has been very beneficial in improving my language skills and in my working skills too. Instituto Hemingway gave me the support when needed and my review :is very positive in this aspect.
