Spanish course and wine tasting in Bilbao

Every day Instituto Hemingway organises cultural activities around the area for the Spanish students studying here in our school. The activities are all free of charge and give students a further opportunity to find out more about the Spanish culture, improve their Spanish and discover the secrets of Bilbao and its surroundings.

During the second fortnight of May, there is a combination of Spanish classes and wine tastings on the 19th and 26th at 7pm. Spanish students, as well as anyone from our volunteering programmes, internship placements or ELE Spanish teaching courses are all welcome to take part in this mini-course on wine-tasting. Better still, it´s free of charge!

During these sessions, we will have the opportunity to enjoy the best wines of the region, such as Txakoli, Rioja, Ribera de Duero.

During the tastings, you will be able to learn:
- Where does wine originate from?
- How is wine produced?
- How do you taste wine properly?
- How do you present wine properly?

Remember that you have to go through 3 different stages when tasting wine:
- visual analysis: the colour, transparency, brightness, intensity, shades of pigment and formation of bubbles
- aroma analysis: fruity, flowery, roasted, spicy, paying attention to its cleanliness, complexity and intensity
- analysis of the tastes in your mouth: acidity, sweetness, astringency from the tanins, material and body, balance, persistente of the aromas, etc.

We will then learn to describe wines with regard to their colour, density, bouquet and flavour. In this way, we will be able to identify the wines with regard to their variety and age. We will also learn about the process of wine growing and the different regions that produce famous wines.
On the 19th May we will try different red wines: Tempranillo, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon from different regions of Spain: Rioja, Ribera de Duero y Cariñena.

On the 26th May we will do a more chronological wine tour. We will start with a young wine, continue with a more aged wine and will finish with a reserve. The objective is to learn to distinguish the different smells and flavours according to the aging process in oak.

Come along on the 19th and 26th May at 7pm where we will raise a glass to Bilbao!
