Activities as part of our Spanish courses in Bilbao: Spanish operetta in the Arriaga Theatre on Friday the 24th June
On Tuesday the 28th June, students from Instituto Hemingway will be able to attend a production of “La del manojo de rosas” (literally “her with the bunch of roses”) by Francisco Ramos de Castro and Anselmo C. Carreño, which will take place in the Theatre Arriaga at 8pm.
This story of a florist, proud of her working roots, desired by a mechanic and an aviator pilot, when a manicurist, a cheap-goods trafficker and a waiter also become involved, saw immediate and resounding success upon its premier; a success which continues to this day.
The “zarzuela,” or operetta, is a special genre of musical Spanish theatre, a type of operetta that was incredibly popular towards the end of the 19th Century and at the start of the 20th. The scripts tend to be comedies of situations, involving hidden identities, role reversals and new discoveries. Entertaining, popular and easy to follow, all Spaniards know their songs – which will inevitably be entertaining for students of Spanish as well.
“La del manojo de rosas” had its premiere in the Fuencarral Theatre in Madrid on the 13th November 1934. It is a two-act lyrical sketch located in the main square of a district in Madrid.
All students participating in courses with Instituto Hemingway, as well as our exchange and internship programmes, are invited to come with us to the theatre. This activity is free for all, and the meeting point will be school at 7.30pm on the 24th June. We look forward to seeing you there!
