Our Spanish school and the “San Francisco Fun Run”
Last Sunday, 2nd October, the San Francisco neighbourhood in Bilbao celebrated its 10th “X Cross popular”, organized by the Tradesmen´s Association of San Francisco. Instituto Hemingway, which always joins in with the activities promoted by the Association, couldn´t it.
As José María, the director of the Instituto Hemingway, told us: “We´re helping to improve the image of the area and that can only be a good thing. And doing sport is never a bad idea”. After trying (unsuccessfully!) to inspire the rest of the Spanish students to put their names down, José María decided to run the race by himself. And so it was that the Instituto Hemingway, (or at least its name, underneath José María´s number 308) ran around the neighbourhood.
The route was a 7 kilometre loop around the neighbourhood. Starting at the Plaza Corazón de María in San Francisco, it went along the Marzana riverbank, Miribilla Street, Bailén… and round again for a second time until it ended up back where it started. The winner finished in 20 minutes. And our representative, José María, finished with the very respectable time of 34 minutes.
Although noone else could be persuaded to run, all of the Spanish students in the school have given the director their hearty congratulations, and of course, we´ll be giving him a toast to celebrate his achievement.
