Learn Spanish outside the classroom : La Alhóndiga

Bilbao’s Alhóndiga is one of the city’s most well-known landmarks. The building was originally a wine-store, but has been recently rennovated and converted into a culture and leisure centre with options to suit all tastes and ages.

We at the Instituto Hemingway know that there is a lot more to learning a language than grammar and exercises, and for this reason we always recommend that our students take part as much as possible in the rich cultural life of the city. Right now in Bilbao, cultural immersion is possible for all who wish to enjoy it, thanks to centres like the Alhóndiga which offer a wide variety of free exhibitions and workshops.

We invite all of our students to visit the Alhóndiga atrium, “The Atrium of Cultures”, whenever they wish. The Atrium is a large public space in which the public may see works by emerging artists free of charge. Furthermore, throughout the year there will be thirteen exhibitions: performances, concerts, contemporary dance shows, videos, multi-sensory games… and many other shows and exhibits which aim to enrich the artisitc experience of the general public.

The latest programme for the Alhóndiga events starts 28th January and covers the whole period until 10th November. This could be an inexpensive and easy option to discover Bilbao’s cultural scene.
