Hit the back of the net with Spanish: Aupa Athletic!

Thanks to an exciting victory against CD Mirandés - during which the Bilbao lions scored six goals – Athletic Bilbao has gone through to the final of the “Copa del Rey”.

The “rojiblancos” haven’t won the cup for over twenty years, so both the players and the fans are keen to make this year their year. The final will be played on the 25th May against FC Barcelona. Challenging though this may seem, Athletic is confident in its coach, Marcelo Bielsa, and whether they win or not it’ll be a great game.

At Instituto Hemingway, we’re all very excited about the match. Everyone in Bilbao supports Athletic, and so we’re sure of an electric atmosphere here in the city on match day. Last time Athletic made the final, crowds of people dressed up in their red and white shirts and scarves and painted their faces and went out to watch the match live on the big screens around the city.

Why not take advantage of the occasion to come to Bilbao and enjoy your favourite sport, and work on your Spanish at the same time? We at Hemingway are football fans too: every month, we visit San Mamés football stadium to explore Athletic’s famous home ground with our students and to find out more about the history of the club in its excellent museum. What’s more, the weather will be fantastic in May. What more could you ask for?
