Good news for the Spanish language
Spanish students, along with other Spanish speakers will be pleased to hear about a recent article published by the online magazine ElFinanciero, which claims that Spanish is becoming an increasingly popular language among the online community. Around 12 million internet users access Spanish content every day, and the popularity of the Spanish language is still increasing still further.
Consequently, internet boffins predict that in the future, English will cease to be the dominant online language. This trend is supported by a study carried out by the Instituto Cervantes and Santillana Foundation (“Spanish, the global language. The Economy”), which found that although in 2000 75% of online content was in English, this figure had descended to 45% by 2010.
Spanish, therefore, is one of the most widely-spoken online languages. And it’s no mystery why the figures are on the rise when you take into account the 450 million people worldwide or whom Spanish is their native language.
The article also discusses the creators of these Spanish language online contents, revealing that 50% are made in Spain, 9% and 10% by Argentina and Mexico and 5% by Spanish speakers in the US.
Now more than ever, it’s clear that being able to speak Spanish is genuinely useful, not just a fashion statement. At Instituto Hemingway, we continue working to teach the Spanish language and to spread Spanish culture. As always, we are delighted to bring it to you.
