Immerse yourself in the Spanish culture outside of the classroom: ideas for the weekend!

There’s no excuse for staying indoors this weekend! The weather will be fantastic, and there’s plenty going on in Bilbao:

Firstly, this Saturday 24th is the so-called Merkatalfiesta. Organized by about a hundred of Bilbao’s businesses and restarants, the fiesta will see in the Spring with music, colour and special offers in the Casco Viejo.

A marquee has already been erected in Calle Bailén, in which they are setting up various stalls, selling mainly handmade products. In addition to this, many of the shops in the Casco Viejo are planning to extend their opening hours to 10pm. They are also promising “irresistable special offers”, such as 1000 free boat trips, free pintxos and raffle prizes.

The fiesta will take over the whole of the Casco Viejo: there will be performances by marching bands, street theatre, contemporary dance shows and a rock concert at 7.30 in Plaza Nueva.

Furthermore, this weekend will see the annual “Cheese Fair” in Getxo, a town situated very close to Bilbao and just on the beach. The fair will celebrate the great variety of regional and foreign cheeses, and has been very successful in the past.
