Learn Spanish and discover Spanish culture: A zarzuela at the Arriaga Theatre
This Thursday, 19th April, our students will have the opportunity to attend a performance of “The court of the Pharoah” at the Arriaga Theatre. This traditional Spanish operetta boats a score by Vicente Lleó and a libretto by Perrín y Palacios.
A zarzuela is a type of musical theatre which alternates between instrumental, sung and spoken scenes. The librettos usually develop comedies of situation.
Entertaining, popular and easy to follow, zarzuelas are a much-loved genre and this one will surely be a lot of fun for our Spanish students.
The show’s plot revolves around Joseph (son of Jacob), who is sold inot slavery in Egypt by his brothers. The unlucky young man ends up working for Potiphar, in whose house he encounters all kinds of problems and finds himself in awkward situations with his new master’s wife.
An interesting detail is that this Biblical opretta was banned for many years, under Franco-era censorship.
As you will be aware, this activity takes place as part of the programme of FREE cultural activities that Instituto Hemingway puts on for its students.
Those who wish to come should meet at Instituto Hemingway at 7pm on Thursday.
We hope to see you there!
