Course for Spanish as a Foreign Language teachers
October 30, 2016
María Cruz Garrido Pascual

From an English teacher to a Spanish teacher with Instituto Hemingway’s teaching course

I started this course for two reasons: I love the Spanish language and I love teaching languages. Years ago I gave English language classes here in a school in Biscay and also taught adult classes in a more standardised format.

The idea of starting a new chapter in my career has stimulated me for a while. On one part I would like to open up new professional opportunities and on another I contemplate the possibility of travelling and living in a not too distant foreign country.

I have found this course very interesting because, despite the experience, I have learnt a lot about the methods of ELE, and also about the common European frame of reference and above all I can compare and contrast all the ideas that I have already practiced in class with new resources, and thus I can say that my professional training has been greatly enriched and improved.

It pleasantly surprised me to find such an enormous variety of resources and activities for ELE on the internet, I got to know more about the virtual classroom of Instituto Cervantes and the many new materials that they put up every day. This world in which I live is expanding day by day.

It pleases me greatly to be able to start a new chapter in my career and to begin developing it in Spanish, because being a native Spanish speaker; I have cultural experiences that I can transmit and share with other linguists.

Preparing for this course has also helped me face the difficult challenge of explaining difficult grammatical aspects of our language to a foreign person. It has made me realise that simply knowing what to say is not sufficient, you have to have the capability and resources to explain it in an effective, simple and functional way.

Finally, what I have liked most about the course is elaborating your own legacy on the programme, as it gives way to allowing you to leave your own ideas and projects on the course with great freedom and liberty. I like the fact that it encourages the use of other resources and the idea that it serves to learn.
