Course for Spanish as a Foreign Language teachers
September 12, 2012
Eva Errando Ricol

To be a spanish teacher : vocation or accident

Whoever believes in the ability to teach a language the moment you leave your own country, few are able to do it during a lifetime. I have always thought, and it nerves me that this type of teaching is carried out lightly. What would happen if one did not know who had left to go abroad and is giving classes in Spanish without any type of preparation? I think that to be a teacher, one needs not just knowledge about the material, but a true ´vocation´ and not to end it as an accident, which occurs on many occasions.

I have always thought that I lacked this vocation and however, reflecting a bit, I realize that I am equally dedicated to teaching: re-education and rehabilitation of the language (another form of teaching) both with children as well as with adults with problems in communicating for diverse reasons, which can be: delayed talking and / or language, due to difficulties in learning, or due to brain damage (stroke, trauma, degenerative neurological diseases, etc)
I started this course because, briefly I wanted to move house, to Milan for employment reasons. I had a degree in Philosophy, although I had not dedicated myself to it and I wanted to retrain myself and have a job prospect.
Actually, I was right when I was saying how complex it is to teach a language and with this course I was pleasantly surprised by the ELE teaching. I have discovered an unknown world and I am delighted. I hope one day to be able to get a job teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language, even though I know how much I have to learn. For now, I have one more tool to help my patients. Actually, the more you know the more you realize the less you know.
