Course for Spanish as a Foreign Language teachers
July 05, 2013
Gorka Álvarez López

Destination Austria as an ELE Spanish teacher

Having a good degree in English Studies and holding a Certificate of Proficiency in Basque Language (EGA), for years i’ve been playing the increasingly maligned, thankless and risky work of teacher, specifically of English and Basque. Throughout my life as a teacher I have taught these languages to different age groups, from children to adults. Likewise, the places where I conducted my study were also very varied and subjected to different conditions: schools, colleges, academies, euskaltegis (private schools of the Basque language), and lastly my own home.

However, there has always been a group with which I haven’t had the opportunity to test my professional skills, the specific groups. Although I have never been assigned a task of this kind, I recognize that somehow I`ve always felt some uncertainty with this type of scenario. This is due to the particular characteristics that surround this type of education, especially with regard to the student and their specific needs. What to do? What syllabus to prepare? How to handle a class with these features without losing the confidence of the students and, therefore, the company that hires our services?
This is one of the reasons why I chose to attend to this course. In it I could find information that can be useful in case I’ll have to face such an experience.
In another way, a few months ago I successfully completed the classroom course preceding this module. Two great opportunities! The first to recycle and refurbish all the things concerning the teaching of languages, with the particularity that, in this case, it was my mother tongue. In fact, despite having studied this subject in college courses and having gone through the mandatory course of Pedagogy (CAP) after completing my university education, I’m sure that as the years go by, there will be new theories in everything related to the ways of transmitting a language. All of us working in this field need to keep you informed about all those proposals that can improve our professional effectiveness.
The second is that, due to my current unemployed status within a socio-economic plight, I was doomed to find a solution in my field. For what I know, the Spanish language is increasingly booming, especially in countries where the crisis has become less hard than in our land, like Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Throughout my (extensive) experience as a student of German I had the opportunity to visit both Germany and Austria, and I have seen the taste of German-speakers for the language of Cervantes. And not for nothing. In the purely professional field (the Latin American market are finding it more appealing) must be added his devotion to everything that has to do with the cultural context on both sides of the Atlantic (dances, food, celebrations, ...), all without forgetting, of course, the tourism, which is why thousands of people from these countries choose a Spanish speaking country as a destination (usually Spain).
So I felt that if I took into account my German language skills after the completion of this course on-line, it could have been a reasonable chance to find a career out of my borders, despite how difficult it may be the experience of uprooting. Anyway, in a few days I would like to pack up and seek my fortune in the Austrian lands (particularly Vienna), while still improving my language skills in the language of Goethe, trying to find something related to the teaching of Spanish, without thereby closing the doors to English.
