Spanish courses in Bilbao
July 27, 2013
Manuel Bernardo Abrodos

Spanish courses: more a fan of teaching than of my studies

My name is Manuel and I studied Journalism at Madrid some years ago, although it’s a decision that I don’t feel especially proud of. Perhaps if I was to return to that time, I would have taken the same decision but with the perspective that it would lead to something greater, now I see it all differently.

Neither is it a profession that I particularly like, nor do I work in it these days, I belive that it is very far from what it ought to be, up to the point that I have the sad sensation that it is a line of work that has betrayed itself.
I think that what inspired me to study Communication was the magic of the radio, that has always fascinated me, but my true vocational calling was in the classrooms.

After a lot of time, due to life circumstances, the opportunity arose to me to take my first steps as an ELE teacher in a secondary school in Canada. It was a marvellous experience from which I gratefully have kept many memories and that changed my life completely: from the instant that it ended, I knew that I would have to do it again in some other place. It helped me realise that giving classes in Spanish was what I truly enjoyed, much more than the best evenings at the radio station that I had been able to do simultaneously up in my short professional career.

This year, the tricky changeability of destinations has placed me in some other corner of the world, much more hidden away and demanding than the North-American prairies and at leaast as cold: Norway. From the gate of the North Pole I discovered the option of starting a training course of ELE teachers that I had just finished. And again, the same smile of satisfaction that I experienced in Canada drew itself on my face.

I am very grateful at Instituto Hemingway for the course, the facilities and the knowledge that I learnt during these last months. I was searching a programme of starting teaching Spanish as a foreign language was very easy, but at the same time with the most complete content possible. A difficult equation to combine, but in the end, as I found out, not impossible.
