Course for Spanish as a Foreign Language teachers
August 17, 2013
Mónica Martínez Hidalgo

The Spanish language: global communication

Hi, my name is Mónica, now I have almost finished the course and like many of my classmates, soon we will start to look for work abroad. Some will have luck of being able to be Spanish teachers. Others like myself, if possible, will look for work as conversational helpers.

I believe Spanish offers us the possibility of not only being able to find work (or at least I hope so!) but of passing to others a culture that is far from the negative image that recently we have been giving off to the world.

Now a day of ‘Hispanic culture’ is not enough for us. Indeed it is more a day of subjugation of the indigenous people more than a celebration of all things Hispanic. In such a way another day was born ‘the day of the Spanish speakers’. To me it seems a more beautiful day, in that a common bond unites all those who are Spanish speakers: the Castilian language that they speak. Not by a conquest in which the halberds, catapults, pikes and large ships were those who made their mark.

With the arrival of new technologies, the information doesn’t have limits, therefore through technology; the Castilian reaches an audience never before imaginable. It has become the third most studied language in the world.

Castilian should not only be useful for ordering ‘cervezas’ in Summer! We must see it as a language that probably will soon be a vehicle of universal knowledge, as is English now. Through it, the science and technology of all countries will be able to be show their progress to millions of people.

It depends on the fact that Spanish neither becomes less elegant nor that it forgets the way that it is open, and provides a culture of solidarity and of course a rich language, always alive and in continuous change.

The words and the culture will allow that frontiers are broken down, the Spanish is international now, we will change it to a universal one.
