Course for Spanish as a Foreign Language teachers
December 16, 2013
Isabel Martínez Hidalgo

Spanish course teachers and new profession

My name is Isabel Martínez and I am a building engineer. I also did a Masters in the Prevention of Workplace Risks in three specialities (Security at the workplace, Industrial Hygiene and Applied Ergonomics and Psychology.)

After doing many Civil Service Exams in vain, I thought that it would be really good if I could demonstrate my knowledge about some of the fields I am conversant in and that I like, which is why I did a training course and an E-learning training course.

I am now thinking of going abroad to try my luck, and it has occured to me that it would be great if I could also teach Spanish, as while I mostly study the pure sciences, I always did really well in languages and in the arts. So therefore, after doing these courses I looked for another, this one about teaching Spanish as a foreign language, and I found about Instituto Hemingway, which seems to be known internationally, and as a plus, has been accredited by the Instituto Cervantes.

Apparently, one must get the calling to study one degree or another, but I believe that the calling can crop up at any moment of your life, even after trying different sectors, like in my case. You don't have to stop saying "I have studied this and I must do this for a living", but you have to put to the test all the abilities humanly possible, to accomplish everything, to outdo yourself, and above all, to be happy helping people with your little contribution. What would we actually know if people like Leonardo Da Vinci (anatomist, architect, artist, botanist, scientist, writer, sculptor, philosopher, engineer, inventor, musician, poet and town planner), Nicholas Copernicus (mathematician, astronomer, jurist, physicist, cleric, Catholic, governor, military leader, diplomat and economist) or Isaac Newton (physict, philosopher, theologist, inventor, alchemist and mathematician) had decided to dedicate themselves solely to one field, the first solely to painting, the second to astronomy and the third to physics, for example, and they hadn't studied other fields? The best thing of all is that by exploring all the things that you could possibly accomplish, you will discover what you really like and what you would like to do for a living..

Through this course I have truly found the motivation to study the methods to teach a language as much on the rise as Spanish.. The theory material is aimed towards the practical. It offers a communicative focus, allowing us to learn very practical educational criteria in order to select activities, or design them ourselves, so that out ELE classes are more interesting and motivational. We could study in depth certain aspects of communicative competence, such as the difficulties students have in understanding the language. Moreover, it gives us the possibility to keep to update with the available resources and the methods used in teaching a second language.
