Course for Spanish as a Foreign Language teachers
January 12, 2014
Ana Belén Formby García

My passion for the Spanish language and culture

Everything starts from my perspective as a foreign languages student. Of course, the teachers taught me grammar, pronunciation....Sometimes the lessons were more simple, sometimes more boring and difficult...but, ultimately, what I noticed most when studying these languages by choice (either in language schools or because I chose them instead of other options) was the lack of up-to-date information that we are given about those countries. The history, the culture .... that is to say, if you were to go and live in one of the countries where the language is spoken, you would not understand many conversations, nor the customs and habits... Yes you will know how to speak the language, but not how to live with it.

I like my language, I think it is currently one of the most important languages, as it has been throughout history. Also, due to its geographical diffusion, it is used in countries with very diverse and exotic cultures. I like my country, the festivals, the Spanish sense of humour, the art, the literature....Why not show all this?

When you are passionate about something it is easier to pass it on to others; you do it with more energy and enthusiasm and it shows.

My students will enjoy their classes, they will learn to speak my language, they will know that we have different accents depending on the region, they will know where the Museo de Prado is, that Pintxos are eaten in Basque country and Gazpacho in Sevilla. They will know about the Civil War and they will be able to explain about it to anyone that asks because they will have a perfect mastery of the grammar.

I want to dedicate myself to teaching, it doesn´t matter to me where. Being able to teach and helping others in this way is a wonderful job.

En mis memorias it is of vital importance that the student has a solid base and very clear concepts right from the start so that they don´t stumble as they progress. For this reason I place a lot of emphasis on doing a test for each topic and on dedicating class hours exclusively to resolving any queries at the end of the module. There is no need to feel ashamed, you learn from scratch and nobody is born with knowledge. The students need to be fully aware that the classroom is a welcoming place of learning and there is nothing to stop them from passing and learning a new language.

I have enjoyed the course a lot and I am impatient to start teaching my vision.
