Course for Spanish as a Foreign Language teachers
January 13, 2014
Elena Serra Colomina

The key elements in a programme for Spanish teachers

At the end of the final project I realised how much I had learnt on this course and I would like to share my experience with those who are currently doing the course. I looked for a course that would bring me closer to teaching foreign languages for a long time and I think that, at last, I found it. This course has introduced me to current teaching methods and has allowed me to get in contact with the world of ELE. I have also learnt the names of editorials, books, and websites that are dedicated to teaching Spanish as a foreign language and that help teachers to prepare tasks for their classes.

I have found the importance of considering the student as the centre, and taking this into account when preparing for class, particularly interesting. So, I didn´t only gear the activities towards students asking simple questions, reading texts such as brochures and menus, asking for prices in shops, knowing how to buy a ticket for any type of transport, but also towards knowing how to socialise with Spanish people, learning a bit about our culture and our way of life. At the same time, I took into account their culture as I think it motivates them if we show them that we are interested in things about their country, their customs, their cuisine, their festivals and traditions. This way we all learn from each other. I have tried to do communication activities and make it so that the students work in pairs and groups and at the end of the class prepare a task that engages the entire class. In other aspects such as the importance of grammar and pronunciation, I have learnt what I sensed: that they are complementary tools for achieving what really matters, which is to make students who can communicate competently. Having finished the course, I am still faced with the most difficult thing: to have the opportunity of putting it into practice and finding students to whom we can transmit our enthusiasm for getting to know other cultures through language.
